Artist Biography
Anushka Sharma Born 1 May 1988 is an Indian actress and producer who works in Hindi films.
Born in Ayodhya and raised in Bangalore, Sharma had her first modelling assignment for the fashion designer Wendell Rodricks in 2007 and later moved to Mumbai to pursue a full-time career as a model. She made her acting debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan in the highly successful romantic film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and rose to prominence with starring roles in Yash Raj Films’ romances Band Baaja Baaraat and Jab Tak Hai Jaan. For playing an aspiring filmmaker in the lattermost, she won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. Sharma went on to earn praise for playing strong-willed women in the crime thriller NH10, and the dramas Dil Dhadakne Do , Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, and Sui Dhaaga. Her highest-grossing releases came with the sports drama Sultan, and Rajkumar Hirani’s religious satire PK and biopic Sanju.
Sharma is the co-founder of the production company Clean Slate Filmz, under which she has produced several films, including NH10. She is the ambassador for multiple brands and products, has designed her own line of clothing for women, named Nush, and supports various charities and causes, including gender equality and animal rights. Sharma is married to the cricketer Virat Kohli.
One of the most popular and highest-paid actresses in India, she has received several awards, including a Filmfare Award. She has appeared in Forbes India’s Celebrity 100 since 2012 and was featured by Forbes Asia in their 30 Under 30 list of 2018.
In 2008, Anushka Sharma made her acting debut with the movie ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ opposite Shah Rukh Khan. For her screen test, she refused to do an impromptu one and took a day to prepare herself. Later on, she was signed for three films under Yash Raj Films banner. In the movie, she played the role of a young bride of a middle-aged man (the role Shah Rukh Khan was playing). The film was hit on the box office and was the second-highest-grossing movie of 2008.
In 2010, Anushka Sharma appeared in the movie ‘Badmash Company’ alongside Shahid Kapoor, Vir Das and Meiyang Chang. The movie received mixed reviews. The same year, Anushka Sharma was seen in the movie ‘Band Baaja Baaraat’ alongside Ranveer Singh where she played the role of a middle-class Punjabi girl who starts her own wedding planning business. The movie received positive reviews and proved to be a sleeper hit. With ‘Band Baaja Baaraat’, Anushka’s three-film contract under Yash Raj Films banner was complete.
In 2011, Anushka Sharma was seen in the movie ‘Patiala House’ alongside Akshay Kumar where she played the role of the love interest of a budding cricketer (played by Akshay Kumar). The same year, Anushka Sharma was seen in the movie ‘Ladies vs Ricky Bahl’ with co-star Ranveer Singh. She played the role of a salesgirl who was hired to outwit a conman (played by Ranveer Singh) but ends up loving him. The film got mixed reviews and was a moderate success at the box office.
In 2012, Anushka Sharma appeared in the swan song of the movie ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif, marking her fifth collaboration under Yash Raj Films banner. The movie was the third highest-grossing movie of 2012.
In 2013, Anushka Sharma appeared in the movie ‘Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola’ alongside Pankaj Kapur, Imran Khan and Shabana Azmi, which was a political satire. Anushka played the role of a strong-headed girl who falls in love with another man despite being engaged. The film received mixed reviews and was a flop at the box office.
In 2014, Anushka Sharma appeared in the movie ‘PK’ alongside Aamir Khan, which was a religious satire. Anushka played the role of a TV journalist in the movie and befriends an alien. The movie proved to be a blockbuster and was the then highest-grossing movie of Bollywood with a collection 98 Million USD.
In 2015, Anushka Sharma enacted in the movie ‘Bombay Velvet’ which is based on the Gyan Prakash’s book ‘Mumbai Fables’. Anushka was seen alongside Ranbir Kapoor and Karan Johar and played the role of a jazz Singer. However, the film proved to be a flop at the box office. The same year, Anushka Sharma acted in the movie ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ and was seen opposite Ranveer Singh. She played the role of a dancer in the movie.
In 2016, Anushka Sharma played the role of a wrestler in the movie ‘Sultan’ alongside Salman Khan. The movie was a hit at the box office and did a collection of 70 Million USD globally. The same year, she was seen in the movie ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ where she played the role of a free-spirited girl alongside Ranbir Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai.
In 2017, Anushka Sharma played the role of a Gujarati tourist who visited Europe and falls in love with her tour guide in the movie ‘ Jab Harry Met Sejal’ alongside Shah Rukh Khan. However, the movie failed to charm the audience and was a flop at the box office.
In 2018, Anushka Sharma played the role of a biographer in the movie ‘Sanju’, co-starring with Ranbir Kapoor. The movie was a hit at the box office and did a collection of 70 Million USD globally. The same year, Anushka was seen in the movie ‘Sui Dhaaga’ playing the role of a wife in a small-town, co-starring with Varun Dhawan. Despite mixed reviews, the movie was a commercial hit at the box office. The last movie of the year was ‘Zero’ playing the role of a NASA scientist who has cerebral palsy, alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif. The film, despite having a multi-starer cast, didn’t prove to be a hit at the box office.
Anushka Sharma: Carrer as a producer
In 2014, Anushka Sharma launched her production company named ‘Clean Slate Films’. In 2015, the first movie she produced and acted under this banner was ‘NH10’ and was Screened at the 5th Beijing International Film Festival. The movie was about a married couple whose lives are endangered after an encounter with criminals. The film was a box office success.
In 2017, Anushka Sharma produced and acted in the movie ‘Phillauri’ alongside Suraj Sharma and Diljit Dosanjh. She played the role of a friendly ghost who wishes to reunite with her lover.
In 2018, Anushka Sharma acted and produced the movie ‘Pari’, where a battered young woman living in the wilderness is rescued by a benevolent man. The movie a commercial hit.
Anushka Sharma will produce a project for Amazon video and two projects for Netflix– Bulbul and Mai.
