Preeti Pillai

Artist Biography

Preeti Pillai is an Indian film Lyricst/Singer, who has worked predominantly in Malayalam movie industry. Preeti has worked in popular movies like Ranarangam, David. Preeti’s previous film to hit the theatres was Ranarangam in the year 2019.

The pleasing timbre of her voice and the freshness exuded in rendition have won Preeti Pillai many fans. The singer, however, is an elusive nightingale, who is mostly heard crooning only for her brother Prashant Pillai’scompositions. Ask her why, and Preeti says, smiling, ‘I also have a full time day job as a German linguist in a Bengaluru-based IT company. To be frank, music is just one of my interests and I love languages, writing and dance too. Moreover, I’m a bit withdrawn by nature.’

Her latest song Vasanthamallike for the film Chandrettan Evideya, scored by her brother, continues to win over the audience and the talented vocalist says she is touched by all the great feedback, especially the film’s director Sidharth Bharatan’s comments. ‘He congratulated us for being a great team, and it felt quite special,’ says Preeti, for whom the creative collaboration with her brother began during her school days.

It was Prashant who introduced me to a software he had downloaded that helped with composing. Soon we started jamming together, making tunes and putting in some puerile lyrics to make our demo. We even used to present them before family members once in a while. There are many such memorable jugalbandi sessions,’ she recalls. Preeti is still the first to listen to and sing Prashant’s compositions. ‘I come into the picture right from the time the melody kicks in. The songs are recorded in my voice and given to the director, who pass them on to the lyricist if he likes them.’

Do creative differences and ego creep in? ‘Both of us are cool headed people and thus there are no ego clashes. Creative differences come up once in a while,’ she explains. Just as her composer brother weaves in a lot of experimentation into his music, Preeti says she tries to breathe in freshness through her rendition, into the song. ‘I have never gone by the rule book, as far as my singing is concerned. I grew up listening to a wide variety of music genres and thus never confined myself to any particular style. I try to incorporate all of them and my style of singing, if anything, is free flowing,’ she explains.

Her creative interests includes many other interesting pursuits like writing, dance and graphology. The singer has released e-books and short stories in the past and has also penned lyrics for films like David and Shaitan in the past. Interestingly, Prashant was instrumental in her getting introduced to German as well. ‘It was my first day of college and he randomly asked me why don’t I learn a foreign language and pick German, to which I said ok. Thus, the credit for it too goes to him,’ she signs off.
